Abia Assembly Moves to Address Aba Blackout, Seeks Urgent Restoration of Power Supply
The Abia State House of Assembly Committee on Power and Public Utilities has intensified efforts to resolve the lingering power outage in the Aba Ringed-Fence Area, expressing serious concern over the devastating impact of the blackout on residents, businesses and industries across the commercial hub.
Led by its Chairman, Hon. Aaron Uzodike, who represents Aba North State Constituency, alongside committee member Hon. Stephen Akachukwu Ucheonye of Aba Central State Constituency, the lawmakers on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, paid an oversight visit to the management of Aba Power Limited to ascertain the cause of the prolonged electricity disruption and explore solutions for the immediate restoration of supply.
The legislators noted that the persistent blackout has taken a heavy toll on economic activities in Aba, affecting households, business owners, manufacturers, artisans and other electricity consumers who depend on stable power to sustain their livelihoods.
They explained that the visit formed part of the House Committee’s commitment to responsive leadership and effective legislative oversight, stressing that engaging directly with the management of Aba Power was necessary to obtain first-hand information on the circumstances responsible for the current electricity situation.
During the meeting, the Chairman of Aba Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, accompanied by members of the company’s management team, attributed the power outage to the inability of Heirs Energies to supply gas following damage to critical equipment, including the switchgear and starter motor, used in the company’s operations.
While expressing regret over the disruption and sympathising with electricity consumers, Prof. Nnaji disclosed that Heirs Energies has procured the required replacement equipment and is currently installing it. He expressed optimism that gas supply to Aba Power would resume within a few days, paving the way for the restoration of electricity to customers within the Aba Ringed-Fence Area.
Responding, Hon. Uzodike assured residents that the concerns of the people have not been overlooked, emphasizing that the House Committee on Power and Public Utilities will continue to engage all relevant stakeholders while closely monitoring developments until normal electricity supply is restored.
He reaffirmed that reliable power remains the backbone of Aba’s industrial and commercial growth, noting that industries, businesses and artisans cannot achieve their full potential under prolonged electricity disruptions.
The committee further pledged its unwavering commitment to protecting the interests of electricity consumers and supporting every legitimate effort aimed at ensuring efficient, stable and sustainable power supply across the Aba Ringed-Fence Area.
