ABIA STATE GOVT DISBURSES OVER ₦1.2 BILLION TO SUPPORT VULNERABLE CITIZENS, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO COMPASSIONATE GOVERNANCE
The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable citizens by approving and disbursing over ₦1.2 billion in humanitarian and social protection interventions across the state between January and August 2026.
The intervention, which underscores the Governor Alex Otti-led administration’s dedication to compassionate governance and inclusive development, has provided critical assistance to hundreds of vulnerable residents facing various socio-economic challenges.
The benefiting vulnerable citizens have received assistance ranging from life-saving medical treatment, housing support for persons living with disabilities, emergency accommodation for disaster victims and educational assistance for indigent students, reflecting the government’s resolve to ensure that no resident is left behind during times of hardship.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the Government House, Umuahia, on Monday, August 3, 2026, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Speaking on the administration’s expanding social protection initiatives, Prince Kanu reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to compassionate governance and social welfare.
He explained that the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection has continued to effectively implement the state’s social protection framework through the identification, assessment and coordination of urgent medical and humanitarian assistance for vulnerable residents across Abia State.
Providing further details, the Commissioner revealed that Governor Otti recently approved the sum of ₦384.7 million for 19 vulnerable beneficiaries to cover life-saving medical interventions, emergency housing assistance, rehabilitation and educational support.
“His Excellency has continued to demonstrate the compassionate disposition of his administration by approving support for vulnerable citizens requiring urgent medical, humanitarian and housing interventions,“ Prince Kanu stated.
He further informed journalists that the Ministry’s routine monitoring and follow-up visits have strengthened accountability in the management of government intervention funds.
According to him, the monitoring process led to the recovery and repatriation of ₦20.9 million in unused funds from two beneficiaries, one who sadly passed away before utilising the approved assistance and another whose medical bills had already been settled before the government support was received.
