Preparations for the second edition of the Abia State Tertiary Institutions Sports Fiesta have officially commenced with the lighting of the Torch of Unity, signalling the countdown to a major sporting event aimed at promoting unity, healthy competition, and sportsmanship among students across tertiary institutions in the state.
The symbolic ceremony took place on Monday, October 19, 2026, at the Michael Okpara Auditorium premises in Umuahia, where Governor Alex Otti received the Torch of Unity, marking the formal commencement of activities ahead of the highly anticipated sporting fiesta.
The competition is scheduled to run from November 3 to November 6, 2026, bringing together students from tertiary institutions across Abia State to showcase their athletic talents, foster friendship, and strengthen bonds of unity through sports.
The initiative reflects the Abia State Government’s commitment to youth development, talent discovery, and the promotion of sporting excellence as important components of its broader investment in the future of young people.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed the development on Monday, October 19, 2026, while briefing journalists at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
With the Torch of Unity now lit, anticipation is building for the four-day sporting event, which is expected to provide a platform for emerging talents, encourage inter-institutional cooperation, and further position sports as a vehicle for youth engagement and social integration in

Abia State.
