Aba Lawmaker’s Office Rejects Claims of Inaction Over Power Crisis, Defends Legislative Efforts
The Office of the Member Representing Aba Central State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly has dismissed allegations that the Abia State House of Assembly has abandoned residents of Aba amid the ongoing electricity challenges, describing the claims as misleading, unfair, and lacking factual verification.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, and signed by Amobi Chibuzor of the Igwebuike Media Team, the office said its attention had been drawn to a publication by what it described as disgruntled elements who made sweeping allegations without first establishing the facts.
The statement maintained that the suggestion that the State House of Assembly had remained silent or inactive over the prolonged power outage in Aba failed to reflect the realities of legislative work. It explained that the legislature carries out its constitutional responsibilities through established legislative procedures, consultations, oversight engagements, and formal resolutions, many of which are not always conducted in the public eye or through media statements.
According to the office, measuring the effectiveness of lawmakers solely by the issuance of public statements diminishes the role of the legislature and misinforms the public about how legislative institutions function.
While acknowledging the severe hardship being experienced by businesses and residents as a result of the persistent electricity outage, the statement stressed that no responsible representative is indifferent to the suffering of the people. It added that resolving such challenges requires coordinated engagement with the appropriate authorities rather than sensational public commentary.
The office also urged media practitioners and public commentators to uphold the principles of responsible journalism by ensuring that criticisms are factual, balanced, and constructive. It warned that the spread of half-truths and inflammatory rhetoric only deepens divisions and erodes public confidence in democratic institutions.
Reaffirming its commitment to the people of Aba, the office stated that residents deserve honest journalism, meaningful engagement, and practical solutions to the electricity crisis rather than narratives designed to provoke outrage.
The statement concluded by insisting that truth must remain the guiding principle in public discourse as efforts continue to address the power situation affecting Aba residents.
