Abia Health Insurance Enrolment Rises to 237,000 as Diaspora Community Backs Vulnerable Residents
The number of residents enrolled in the Abia State Health Insurance Scheme has increased to 237,000, reflecting a steady rise in access to affordable healthcare services across the state.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, August 10, 2026, while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
According to the Commissioner, enrolment in the state health insurance scheme rose from 233,000 to 237,000 between July 27 and August 7, representing an increase of about 4,000 beneficiaries within the period.
Prince Kanu also revealed that the Abiriba Community Improvement Union, North America Charter, has demonstrated strong support for the state’s efforts to expand healthcare coverage by committing to sponsor more than 1,000 indigent persons under the informal sector of the health insurance scheme.
The initiative is expected to provide vulnerable members of the community with greater access to essential healthcare services without the financial burden often associated with out-of-pocket medical expenses.
The Commissioner commended the Abiriba community in North America for the gesture, urging other communities, organisations and well-meaning individuals to emulate the initiative by supporting residents who may otherwise struggle to afford healthcare.
He said broader participation from communities and organisations would further strengthen the state’s efforts to expand health insurance coverage and ensure that more vulnerable residents can access quality healthcare when needed.
