Abia State Govt Moves to Improve Housing Estates, Unveils Transparent Plan for New Pocket Housing Layout
The Abia State Government has intensified efforts to improve living conditions across its housing estates, with the Ministry of Housing directed to undertake immediate remedial works at the Amaoba Housing Estate in Umuahia while preparations continue for the permanent reconstruction of the estate’s internal roads.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday, August 10, 2026, at Government House, Umuahia, while briefing pressmen on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu explained that the Ministry of Housing had been directed to collaborate with the Ministry of Works to carry out rainy-season maintenance works on the roads within Amaoba Housing Estate. The intervention, he said, is aimed at improving accessibility and easing the difficulties faced by residents during the rainy season pending the commencement of permanent reconstruction of the estate roads.
The Commissioner also disclosed that the State Government had provided a new transformer for Amaoba Housing Estate as part of measures to address the electricity challenges confronting residents and improve power supply within the estate.
Meanwhile, the government has provided further details on its proposed pocket housing layout in Umuahia, describing the initiative as part of its broader efforts to expand access to quality and affordable housing for residents.
The Commissioner said the proposed development would feature a mix of housing types designed to accommodate the varying needs and preferences of prospective subscribers. The layout will include detached five-bedroom houses with boys’ quarters, semi-detached housing units, as well as two- and three-bedroom blocks of flats.
Providing additional details on the scheme, Architect Uzoije disclosed that the Ministry of Housing would soon begin the registration process for intending subscribers through an Expression of Interest form. This would subsequently be followed by the opening of a dedicated online portal through which payments would be made.
He explained that the government had designed the process to ensure transparency, fairness and equal opportunity for all interested subscribers. According to him, allocation under the scheme would be conducted on a first come, first served basis, while payments would be made under an off-plan arrangement tied to the progress of construction.
Under the proposed payment structure, subscribers would pay 30 per cent at the commencement of construction, another 40 per cent around the midpoint of construction, while the final 30 per cent would be paid upon completion of the houses.
Emphasising the government’s commitment to transparency, Architect Uzoije said:
“The whole process will be so free and transparent. No interference whatsoever. Anybody who is interested will see the process, and the whole exercise will be very smooth,” Architect Uzoije stated.
He further disclosed that contractors were expected to mobilise to the site within the next week, signalling the imminent commencement of physical construction works on the project.
According to Architect Uzoije, the government is targeting the delivery of the housing units within the next few months after the official flag-off of the project, with the broader objective of ensuring that prospective beneficiaries can begin taking possession of their homes by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
The initiative, he explained, reflects Governor Alex Otti’s broader vision of providing quality, accessible and well-planned housing for Abians, while also ensuring that government housing projects are executed through processes that are open, predictable and free from undue interference.
The proposed pocket housing layout is therefore expected to provide prospective homeowners in Umuahia with a range of options while complementing the State Government’s ongoing efforts to rehabilitate existing housing estates and improve the overall standard of residential infrastructure across Abia State.
