ASTOPU Secures Compensation for Ogbor Hill Crash Victims, Hands Over Millions in Cheques to Affected Tricycle Operators

In a significant demonstration of solidarity and commitment to the welfare of its members, the leadership of the Abia State Tricycle Operators Union (ASTOPU), Aba Zone, on Monday, August 3, 2026, officially presented compensation cheques to tricycle operators affected by the tragic Ogbor Hill road accident nearly two months ago.
The cheque presentation ceremony took place at the ASTOPU Aba Zonal Headquarters on Azikiwe Road, Aba, where union executives, stakeholders and beneficiaries gathered to witness the fulfillment of months of negotiations aimed at securing justice for the affected operators.
The compensation followed the devastating accident at the Waterside axis of Ogbor Hill, Aba, where a heavy-duty truck reportedly lost control while descending the steep slope and rammed into several commercial tricycles. Initial reports indicated that at least six tricycles were damaged, prompting an immediate rescue operation by residents and emergency responders. Although the incident resulted in extensive property damage and disrupted the livelihoods of many operators, no lives were lost.
Addressing members during the presentation, ASTOPU Aba Zonal Chairman, Comrade Victor Azubuike, expressed gratitude to the affected operators for their patience, resilience and confidence in the union throughout the compensation process.
He explained that immediately after the accident, the union took decisive steps to ensure that the company involved accepted responsibility.
According to him, the leadership engaged security authorities, including the Area Command, and when initial efforts yielded little progress, the union sought legal intervention. Those efforts eventually produced results, leading to an agreement under which the company paid 80 percent of the assessed compensation.
The chairman described the successful payment as a victory for collective leadership and thanked God for making the process successful. He also noted that while members suffered financial losses during the period their tricycles remained off the road, the greatest source of gratitude was that no life was lost in the unfortunate incident.
Also speaking, the Aba Zonal Secretary of ASTOPU, Comrade Kenneth Chiemela Nwosu, thanked God that the accident did not claim any lives, describing the compensation as proof that persistence and unity can produce positive outcomes. He appreciated the cooperation of TSL Cargo Company throughout the resolution process and encouraged members to remain peaceful and law-abiding.
A stakeholder of the union, Hon. Ukadike Ogbuagu commended the leadership of Comrade Victor Azubuike, describing the successful compensation as an unprecedented achievement in the history of the union. He noted that the leadership demonstrated sincerity, transparency and an unwavering commitment to protecting the interests of members without compromise or sentiment.
He further stated that the achievement reflected the quality of leadership being encouraged under the administration of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, noting that the governor’s commitment to placing capable individuals in positions of responsibility continues to yield positive results across different sectors.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, David Chinedu Emmanuel expressed profound appreciation to the ASTOPU Chairman and the entire executive for their determination and dedication throughout the negotiation process. He acknowledged that the compensation would go a long way in helping the affected operators rebuild their businesses and return to work.
