INEC Extends Deadline for Parties to Submit 2027 Governorship, Assembly Candidates
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit their lists of candidates for the 2027 Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections.
The electoral umpire announced that the deadline, initially fixed for Saturday, August 8, 2026, has been moved to Tuesday, August 11, 2026, giving political parties additional time to complete the nomination process.
The extension followed appeals from several political parties seeking more time to finalise and upload their candidates’ lists on INEC’s dedicated online portal.
The Commission disclosed the development in a statement issued on Saturday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
The latest adjustment is expected to give parties an additional window to resolve outstanding issues and ensure that their candidates’ details are properly submitted before the new deadline.
Meanwhile, INEC has also issued an important deadline ahead of the August 15, 2026 Osun State governorship election.
The Commission announced that voters who applied for replacement of lost, damaged or defaced Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have until midnight on Sunday, August 9, 2026, to print downloadable copies of their replacement cards.
According to INEC, the deadline is necessary to allow the Commission to compile accurate data on the number of downloadable PVCs that have been printed.
The exercise will also help the electoral body determine the final statistics of PVCs collected by voters ahead of the crucial Osun governorship election.
With the Osun election only days away, the Commission’s latest directive underscores the importance of completing all outstanding voter documentation before election day.
