Kenya Builds $345 Million FIFA-Standard Stadium Ahead of 2027 AFCON
Kenya is making a bold statement on the African sporting landscape with the construction of the 60,000-capacity Raila Odinga International Stadium, a world-class FIFA-standard facility rising in Nairobi at an estimated cost of $345 million.
The massive project is already attracting attention as one of the most expensive stadium developments on the African continent, reflecting Kenya’s determination to strengthen its sports infrastructure ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
When completed, the stadium is expected to serve as one of the main venues for the continental tournament, which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania. It is also set to become the country’s largest football-specific stadium, providing a modern venue capable of hosting major international football competitions and other large-scale events.
The project’s estimated cost places it among Africa’s biggest stadium investments. Although it is still below the approximately $450 million spent on South Africa’s iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban and the roughly $600 million used to construct Cape Town Stadium for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, those facilities were built more than 15 years ago, making Kenya’s investment particularly significant in today’s context.
Beyond hosting AFCON 2027, the Raila Odinga International Stadium is expected to boost sports development, attract international tournaments, create employment opportunities during and after construction, and strengthen Kenya’s reputation as a destination for major sporting events.
