Abia State Government to Hold 2026 Capacity-Building Workshop for Traditional Rulers Across Three Senatorial Zones
The Abia State Government has concluded plans to host the 2026 Zonal Traditional Rulers’ Capacity Building Workshop as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen traditional institutions and enhance their contribution to peace, security, inclusive governance, and sustainable community development across the state.
The workshop, which is being organised by the Abia State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in collaboration with the 17 Local Government Councils, is themed “Strengthening Traditional Institutions for Peace, Security, Inclusive Governance and Sustainable Community Development in Abia State.”
The initiative is designed to equip traditional rulers with modern leadership skills, conflict resolution techniques, and community development strategies to enable them play more effective roles as custodians of culture and critical partners in grassroots governance.
According to the programme schedule, the workshop will be held in the three senatorial districts of the state.
The Abia Central Senatorial Zone workshop will take place from August 6 to 7, 2026, at the Umuahia North Local Government Headquarters, beginning at 9:00 a.m. daily.
Traditional rulers in the Abia South Senatorial Zone will converge at the Aba Town Hall from August 12 to 13, 2026, while participants from the Abia North Senatorial Zone will hold their session at the Ohafia Local Government Headquarters from August 19 to 20, 2026. Both workshops will also commence at 9:00 a.m. each day.
The capacity-building programme reflects the commitment of Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, to empowering traditional institutions as indispensable partners in promoting peaceful coexistence, strengthening grassroots security, deepening inclusive governance, and accelerating sustainable development across Abia State.
Traditional rulers from the respective senatorial zones have been urged to attend promptly and participate fully in the strategic workshop, which is expected to further reinforce collaboration between the government and traditional institutions in advancing development at the community level.
